(Media-Newswire.com) - Two building projects in Churchill are providing great benefits for local residents, Community Development Minister Peter Batchelor said today.

In Churchill, Mr Batchelor’s visited the construction site for the Churchill Intergenerational Hub, and the third house being built through the Our Future, Our Place, a project run by TRY Youth and Community Services.

Mr Batchelor said they were both good examples of projects that involve strong partnerships and community involvement to address local needs.

“It’s exciting to see the land for the Churchill Hub cleared and this project underway,” Mr Batchelor said.

“This centre is going to be a fantastic multi-purpose facility that will house a range of community services and provide opportunities for the community to get involved in many different activities.

“Goodquality community facilities are an important part of strong and vibrant communities and the Brumby Government is delighted to invest in this wonderful project as part of our continued commitment to the region.”

Mr Batchelor said it was fantastic to see the sustainable results of the Our Future, Our Place project.

“Thanks to the sale of the first two houses built through Our Future, Our Place – including one in Churchill and one in Morwell – the project is now able to use the profits to build more houses,” Mr Batchelor said.

“These new houses will not only provide energy-efficient housing for the local community, but also opportunities for more local people to gain on-the-job skills and qualifications in building and construction.

“The project has already helped 40 people from Churchill and Morwell receive training and qualifications, with 23 people who were previously unemployed now working full or part time thanks to this program.

“By providing opportunities for local people to build their skills and get into the workforce, this project is helping to open doors for their future.”

Mr Batchelor said the Brumby Government provided $1.86 million to the Churchill Intergenerational Hub, with Latrobe City Council contributing more than $2 million. The Federal Government has provided $800,000, with Monash University contributing $135,000.

The Brumby Government invested more than $185,000 to establish Our Future Our Place and provided the land for the first two houses.

A further $280,000 was provided by the Brumby Government through Workforce Participation Partnerships to help TRY Youth and Community Services get local job seekers who have had difficulties securing work to get involved in the project.

Other project partners included the Federal Government, Latrobe City Council, Workways Job Network and the Gippsland Area Consultative Committee.

“Both projects are great examples of what can be achieved when all levels of government – State, Federal and local – work in partnership with the community to address local needs,” Mr Batchelor said.
