(Media-Newswire.com) - Work has started on dredging at Mooloolaba Harbour, with the upgrading of the harbour's car-trailer parking area to start at the end of May.
Transport Minister John Mickel said the $200,000 dredging project would remove the sand shoal from the entrance channel, providing improved access to the harbour.
"The dredge will remove 5,000 cubic metres of sand from the entrance channel and should take about one week to complete depending on weather and tides," Mr Mickel said.
"The work will significantly improve safety and access for boaties."
Mr Mickel said the sand shoal was the result of the rough weather encountered in January and February.
"Weekly surveys undertaken by Maritime Safety Queensland since the formation showed it was naturally clearing," he said.
"However dredging became a priority when the most recent surveys indicated it was starting to increase.
"As a result, temporary markers were installed to direct vessels around the shoal into the harbour and the required permits for the works were obtained to have a dredging contractor on stand-by."
Mr Mickel said the $115,000 car-trailer resurfacing project to be carried out by RoadTek would start on the 21st of May and would take two to three days to complete, depending on weather conditions.
"The 140 bay car parking area, which services the harbour's two boat ramps and public pontoon facility, will be fully resurfaced with new asphalt and line marking," he said.
"Users of the boat harbour can expect half of the car-trailer parking area to be open at any one time during construction.
"I urge local boaties to be aware of the dredge and construction workers and take care around the work sites while they make these safety improvements for harbour users."
