(Media-Newswire.com) - Dr. Harvey J. Miller, professor and Chair of the Department of Geography at the University of Utah, will present the Texas A&M University Department of Geography’s 2008 Haynes Lecture at 4pm on November 21st in Room 112 of the Eller Oceanography and Meteorology (O&M) Building.

Miller’s lecture, titled “Place-Based Versus People-Based Accessibility,” will explore the concept that social and economic theories should be looked at through what he calls a “people-based” perspective.

“Almost all theories about human-related phenomena look at human activities from a place-based perspective,” Miller said. “For example, if we want to know if health care, education or other services are accessible, we often look at how close these opportunities are to people's homes or workplaces. The trouble is, people do more than just stay home and go to work. Many people in the world are much more mobile across all geographic scales than we were just a generation or two ago. In my lecture, I will argue that we need to extend our social and economic theories to include a people-based perspective: one that focuses on the individual in space and time.”

The Haynes Lecture Series is held annually in honor of Reta A. Haynes. It was established in 2001 by Dr. Daniel Sui, professor of Geography and the inaugural holder of the Reta A. Haynes Chair in Geosciences. The annual Haynes lecture was made possible by the Reta A. Haynes endowed chair fund.

A reception to honor Miller will be held at the Reveille Inn, 440 Old College Road, immediately following the lecture. Those planning to attend the reception should RSVP at http://geosciences.tamu.edu/files/geography/rsvpForm.php .
