(Media-Newswire.com) - Carroll College Business Department senior Mary Currin was selected to attend the Sigma Beta Delta Inaugural Leadership Academy in San Diego, Calif., on January 20-23, 2011. Sigma Beta Delta invited each of its 265 chapters nationwide to select one nominee for consideration, from which 25 would be chosen to serve as an academy participant. At the academy, Currin and the other students selected were asked to design a project that would use the potential of the Sigma Beta Delta network to positively impact humanity. Currin says her project entailed her working with four other students from around the nation to develop a plan for an organ donor registration project.

"The leadership academy was a rewarding experience," says Currin. "The participants were from colleges around the country, and our assembly provided a range of diverse opinions on several issues facing our society. The focus of the leadership academy was on the opportunity networking offers as a tool for positive change."

Currin plans to complete a bachelor's degree in accounting with minors in business administration and English writing in May 2012. Hailing from Riverdale, Calif., Currin is a few years older than the typical Carroll undergraduate and says she chose her return to college life at Carroll because of the college's outstanding reputation and its small class sizes, allowing students more opportunities for internships, conferences, research and learning beyond the classroom.

Carroll College's chapter of Sigma Beta Delta was established during spring semester 2009. Sigma Beta Delta, an international honor society for business, management and administration, was established to honor students who have attained superior scholarship and achievements in business programs in schools and colleges with regional accreditation. Sigma Beta Delta encourages students to distinguish themselves through honorable service to humankind.
