(Media-Newswire.com) - The beauty of Western Australia’s North-West has been captured in a stunning, full-colour book launched by Environment Minister David Templeman in Karratha.
North-West Bound takes readers on a journey from the unique reefs off WA’s coast to the fascinating formations of Purnululu National Park and the endless red plains of WA’s heartland, from the Batavia Coast to the Kimberley.
Mr Templeman said the book featured excellent information and photography which he hoped would encourage Western Australians to appreciate and embrace their State, as well as attract and inform visitors.
“North-West Bound features spectacular photographs from some of WA’s top photographers who have captured the beauty of many of WA’s most impressive land and seascapes,” he said.
“It contains descriptions about the history and natural features so people can learn the stories behind the places they visit, and includes 27 easy-to-read maps which point readers in the direction of places to go and things to see and do.
“It also strives to help readers understand the immense conservation and wildlife values of WA’s precious conservation reserves and some of the geological and evolutionary processes which have given rise to their creation.
“North-West Bound illustrates why the Carpenter Government is so passionate about protecting and preserving our environment for future generations to enjoy.”
The Minister said North-West Bound was first published by the department in 1990 and reprinted and revised in 1997. This latest edition covered a much wider geographical area than those before it.
“Regions such as the Batavia Coast, the northern Wheatbelt and Murchison have been incorporated into it, including major attractions such as Kalbarri National Park, Geraldton and the unique Houtman Abrolhos Islands,” he said.
“Less well known but equally attractive destinations, such as New Norcia, Green Head and Greenough, have not been neglected.
“Several new national parks and marine parks which have been declared in recent years are now covered in the book. These include the Montebello Islands Marine Park, the King Leopold Ranges Conservation Park ( along the famous Gibb River Road ) and the extensions to Ningaloo Marine Park.
“The proposed Edel Land National Park, the proposed Dirk Hartog Island National Park - both of which lie in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area - and the proposed Dampier Archipelago Marine Park ( offshore from Dampier and Karratha ) have also been showcased in the book.”
Mr Templeman urged everyone who enjoyed WA’s natural environment to buy a copy of this book to experience the visually stunning parks and other attractions in WA’s North-West, even if it was just from an armchair.
North-West Bound is available for $29.95 from newsagents and bookshops and from the Department of Environment and Conservation by phoning ( 08 ) 9334 0333 or visiting the online bookshop at http://www.naturebase.net
