(Media-Newswire.com) - The Minister for Skills and Workforce Participation, Jacinta Allan, today announced reviews of the Victorian TAFE system and government training policies in a bid to improve governance and to ensure TAFE institutions are better able to recognise individuals’ prior learning and experience.
Officially opening the TAFE Directors Australia Convention 2007 in Melbourne, Ms Allan said it was vital that Victorian TAFE institutions were able to respond quickly and effectively to industry needs.
“The review of TAFE governance arrangements in Victoria will ensure that institutions are managed in a way that enables them to be more responsive to the changing needs of industry,” Ms Allan said.
Ms Allan said that one of the reviews would ensure that the Victorian Government’s vocational education and training policies assist in the recognition of prior on-the-job learning towards TAFE qualifications.
“It is essential that TAFE institutions are equipped to assist people seeking recognition of prior learning to gain qualifications or a statement of attainment without repeating training unnecessarily,” Ms Allan said.
“This can reduce the time it takes to increase qualification levels and start a new career, and free up places in TAFE institutions, making our training system more efficient.”
The review follows the Brumby Government’s announcement to establish 13 Skills Stores across the State, which will provide Victorians with free expert advice about their current skills, future skill development options and training they need to turn their skills into qualifications.
Five Skills Stores were launched by Ms Allan in July this year.
In a wide ranging speech to the heads of Australia’s TAFE institutions, Ms Allan today also reinforced the need for the Federal Government to work with the States and Territories to boost the skills of all Australians.
Ms Allan said State and Federal Governments need to work collaboratively to ensure Australia continues to have a world-class training system and to overcome current and emerging skills challenges.
“The next Commonwealth-State Training Agreement must recognise the real costs of running TAFE and also take into account the differing economic and social conditions that drive demand for training across Australia,” Ms Allan said.
