(Media-Newswire.com) - The Brumby Government strongly believes that the Latrobe Valley has a big future and a clean future, through clean coal power generation, and has invested heavily in this aim to secure jobs and the state’s future power supplies.
Today’s announcement by Shadow Federal Minister for Energy, Senator Chris Evans, of $60 million investment in clean coal technology and infrastructure in the Latrobe Valley is a commitment to Victoria’s future.
“I am calling today on the Howard Government to listen to Victoria’s rejection of nuclear power and to match today’s commitment made by Senator Evans,” Mr Batchelor said.
“This $60 million commitment will help to ensure the future of jobs and power production in the Latrobe Valley, while saving 50,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.
“Clean coal technologies, together with carbon capture and storage, will play a big part in the state’s future energy supplies as clean sources of energy for Victoria.
“Through our Energy Technology Innovation Strategy ( ETIS ) the Brumby Government has already committed over $100 million to the development of technologies that will enable coal-fired generation to produce electricity with near-zero emissions.
“However, our plan does not include generating nuclear energy or installing nuclear power plants in Victoria.
“The Latrobe Valley’s future lies in clean coal, not the Howard Government’s nuclear power plants.”
Mr Batchelor spoke yesterday in Parliament about the dangers posed by nuclear power in Victoria.
“Mr Howard’s plans for 25 nuclear power stations across Australia would come at a massive cost, not only in terms of construction and the nightmare of waste management for future generations, but in terms of the jobs and communities that would be decimated in areas such as the Latrobe Valley as power production shifted,” Mr Batchelor said.
“The Brumby Government supports the Latrobe Valley, and today’s announcement is another potential boost for the state.
“So it is disappointing to see the nuclear power fan club, which includes Coalition MPs from the Latrobe Valley, clamouring in the line for the ribbon-cutting ceremonies for Howard’s nuclear power plants.”
