Suburban New Yorkers Call On Senate And Country To Reject Sturgell And The FAA
Rockland County New York citizens today thanked the Senate for tabling the confirmation hearing of "Bobby" Sturgell as FAA head, and renewed their call for repudiation of the FAA "NY/NJ/PA Airspace Redesign".
(Media-Newswire.com) - Rockland County, NY - December 27, 2007: Facing the continued threat of the Federal Aviation Administration’s “NY/NJ/PA Airspace Redesign” which seeks to route up to 600 loud commercial jet-craft flights per day less than a mile over their heads - and irate at a federal agency which they contend continually puts profits over people’s health, physical safety, due process rights, and quality of life - Rockland County, NY citizens today thanked the Senate for sagaciously slamming the brakes on Robert A. “Bobby” Sturgell’s quest for fast-track confirmation as would-be FAA Administrator. A confirmation hearing on Sturgell’s nomination originally scheduled for last Friday, has been postponed.
John J. Tormey III, environmental activist attorney with grassroots group “Quiet Rockland”, said: “It is astounding that, by last Friday afternoon, the Failed Aviation Administration trotted out none other than disgraced former FAA head Marion Blakey to yet-again float P.R. for them. Blakey issued a press release direct from her new golden-parachuted post as head of the ‘Aerospace Industries Association’, urging Congress with characteristic arrant pandering to accelerate Sturgell’s hearing, while assuring all the rest of us that ‘the nation’s skies have never been safer’. That’s like trotting out former FEMA head Michael Brown to tell us that all has never been better with New Orleans.
“The actual facts are that Sturgell’s and Tombstone Agency’s habitual nod-and-wink to the compulsive profiteering and over-saturation of our skies relentlessly perpetrated by the airline companies with whom FAA shares a pecuniary bed, led to recent numerous near-crashes of passenger-filled, fuel-laden moving aircraft at JFK, Newark, O’Hare/Chicago Center, LAX, and elsewhere. The FAA coerces a workforce of overworked, overstressed, and justifiably disgruntled air traffic controllers - many now either at retirement age, or else new and under-trained - to use obsolete equipment and endure inhuman working conditions. FAA persistently breaks the spirit of these noble ATC’s and their union, and puts travelers and others on the ground at unacceptable risk. Confirming Sturgell, implementing the Redesign, and condoning further air-traffic increases and abuse of the ATC’s, would complete a recipe for ecological nightmare and multiple aeronautical disasters. Congress and the American people must absolutely not let Sturgell’s confirmation happen.
“Blakey would do more favors for the failed agency for which she used to flack, by, in Archie Bunker-speak, simply stifling herself. Not relevant anymore, one must ask why she continues to act as if she is still on the FAA payroll. Her latest publicist-concoction, ( ‘http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/news_press_release,247020.shtml’ ), demonstrates, within the space of one page, the navigational bearings of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the integrity of Teapot Dome, and the reality-testing of Dr. Timothy Leary. That said, ‘Quiet Rockland’ anticipates her next pro-agency press release when the already-marginalized Blakey will undoubtedly proffer personal endorsements of Herbert Hoover, Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, and her putative successor’s partial namesake Frank A. Sturgis. Blakey’s bizarre prop-up of Sturgell is as if Hindenburg Captain Max Pruss came back from the grave and just endorsed Exxon Valdez Captain Joseph Hazelwood.
“Far more importantly for the sake of the safety and peace of mind of this country, many of whom, including the President himself, have been deceived by the FAA’s now-manifest puerile stratagem of ‘purposeful-sky-oversaturation-followed-by-blame-travelers-and-victims-on-the-ground, to-make-more-money’ - ‘Quiet Rockland’ renews its call and respectful request to all United States Senators that the confirmation of “Bobby” Sturgell as FAA Administrator be soundly and summarily rejected. Additionally, ‘Quiet Rockland’ remains confident that the dozen-and-counting federal litigations and current audit of the FAA by the U.S. Government Accountability Office ( GAO ) on topic, will result in the compulsory unequivocal withdrawal of the FAA’s ill-conceived NY/NJ/PA Airspace Redesign - and the final cessation of FAA’s recidivist acquiescence to the unmitigated greed inherent in purposeful airline overcrowding and over-scheduling of our skies”.
