(Media-Newswire.com) - The Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Bob Cameron today launched the Police and Emergency Services Games with the help of Olympic greats Cathy Freeman and Steve Moneghetti.
Mr Cameron said the games, which have 24 agencies involved, generated significant goodwill between emergency services agencies.
“It is fantastic to have an event that allows theses agencies to develop close ties, as they are often called upon to work together in emergency situations,” he said.
Mr Cameron said Victoria’s police and emergency services’ workers had enthusiastically embraced the games experience.
“Over 2,500 of our finest police officers and emergency service staff and volunteers will line up across 42 sports in a wide variety of disciplines.
“The diversity of events is amazing, from indoor cricket to track and field events, archery to equestrian, and hockey to tennis, triathlon and golf,” Mr Cameron said.
The games are held across Victoria, with events in Melbourne and regional centres such as Glenrowan, Benalla, Bendigo, Geelong, Balliang, Phillip Island and Ballarat.
There are very few limits on participation in the Police and Emergency Services Games with events open to all eligible emergency services’ workers.
“These games bring out the best in our emergency workers and helps them refine their team work skills and foster the physical attributes that are essential for operational tasks,” Mr Cameron said.
“Equally, it also helps the workers release the tension that naturally develops from their stressful work environment.”
Agencies involved include Victoria Police, MFB, CFA, Metropolitan Ambulance Service, VicSES and Rural Ambulance Victoria amongst others.
The Victoria Police and Emergency Services Games will be held between 28 March and 10 April 2008. For further information, visit www.emergencyservicesgames.org.au
