(Media-Newswire.com) - The Emergency Department at Dandenong Hospital will be redeveloped and expanded following a $25 million commitment in this week’s Brumby Government State Budget.
Health Minister Daniel Andrews said the funding was part of a $466.9 million capital boost in the Budget to continue rebuilding Victoria’s hospitals and health infrastructure.
“The Brumby Government is taking action to deliver quality health services for Victorian families and the Dandenong Hospital Emergency Department redevelopment will provide a major boost to people in the south-eastern growth corridor,” Mr Andrews said.
“The Dandenong Emergency Department will be expanded from 35 to 55 treatment spaces, including a 20-bed short stay unit.
Mr Andrews said the project will include redevelopment and expansion of the Emergency Department together with improvements to associated clinical support service facilities.
“This includes the upgrade of diagnostic imaging services such as radiology, redevelopment of outpatient services and improvements to the pharmacy and pathology areas,” Mr Andrews said.
Dandenong MP John Pandazopoulos said the works will separate the child and adult patient waiting areas, and provide separate and improved facilities for people presenting with mental health issues.
“These improvements will enable the hospital to treat an extra 5000 emergency patients each year, with all patients able to be managed in a more appropriate environment,” Mr Pandazopoulos said.
Mr Andrews said the Brumby Government has made a long-term commitment to investing in hospitals and in rebuilding Victoria’s public health system.
“This funding announcement builds on the State Government’s record investment in health that has seen us increase health services funding by 112 per cent since 1999, more than 61 hospitals and aged care facilities rebuilt or upgraded and more than 8000 extra nurses and 1800 doctors employed.”
