(Media-Newswire.com) - A review into the Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre ( TPC ) will be considered by the Brumby Government.
Established in 1994, Turning Point Centre is a major Victorian-based research and treatment centre for people and communities adversely affected by alcohol and other drugs.
Mental Health Minister Lisa Neville said the independent review was conducted in late 2007 and was commissioned jointly by the Board of Turning Point Centre and the Brumby Government.
The review has assessed Turning Point’s charter and mandate in the light of changing alcohol and other drug use trends and possible changes to the centre’s strategic direction and priorities.
It was overseen by senior staff from the Mental Health and Drugs Division of the Department of Human Services, members of Turning Point’s board and the chairperson of VicHealth.
“This is an important review of one of Victoria’s most respected centres for alcohol and drug research and treatment,” Ms Neville said.
“It’s vital the centre has the capacity to respond flexibly to the changing needs of the Victorian community.
“The report stressed the need for an organisation to provide leadership for the Victorian alcohol and other drug treatment sector, especially as many of the treatment services are community based.
The review made 22 recommendations, aimed at improving the centre’s governance and operating structure.
Ms Neville said the Government would look at all recommendations and make a decision in due course.
“I welcome this review into Turning Point and we will be consulting very closely with the Turning Point Centre’s board, the centre’s clients and the local community over the next few months,” Ms Neville said.
“This is an important service and we want to work with them to ensure that any changes are done properly.”
Acting Chairperson of the Board of Turning Point Ray Judd said he welcomed the review’s findings.
“We will be working closely with the Brumby Government and our stakeholders to ensure Turning Point continues its cutting edge position in the treatment of alcohol and other drug related problems in Victoria,” Mr Judd said.
