(Atlanta, Ga. th August 4, 2008) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is providing $25,000 in technical assistance for a Brownfields Sustainability Pilot for the Greenville Workforce Housing Project in Greenville, S.C. EPA will work with the City of Greenville to incorporate sustainable redevelopment into the planning, design and implementation of its brownfields project.
(Media-Newswire.com) - ( Atlanta, Ga. – August 4, 2008 ) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) is providing $25,000 in technical assistance for a Brownfields Sustainability Pilot for the Greenville Workforce Housing Project in Greenville, S.C. EPA will work with the City of Greenville to incorporate sustainable redevelopment into the planning, design and implementation of its brownfields project.
Greenville will incorporate sustainable features such as porous surfaces, gardens and energy efficiency into the Green Avenue redevelopment project. This includes redevelopment of a former service station and adjacent supermarket into affordable housing on a combined site. Environmental issues include tank removals, demolition and disposal of materials with asbestos and lead paint. Greenville received past EPA Brownfields Assessment Grants resulting in several successful projects including a baseball stadium, commercial space and housing.
Brownfields are sites where expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In January 2002, President Bush signed the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act, which increased funding, expanded authority, and provided liability protection to help communities revitalize brownfields. EPA provides grants, technical assistance and training to support local brownfields efforts.
