(Media-Newswire.com) - With Disability Action Week in full swing, Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten has today reminded building designers about the Queensland Government’s Wayfinding Design Guidelines and System Audit booklets.
Mr Schwarten said the booklets were developed to demonstrate solutions for a more flexible and inclusive built environment.
“The Department of Public Works ensures easy access for people of all abilities in the buildings it designs and constructs and has developed a series of booklets to share its knowledge with the industry,” Mr Schwarten said.
“The booklets contain material sourced from experts such as architects, landscape architects, lawyers, engineers and building experts.
“We want people to realise that wayfinding is more about design than it is about signs.”
Mr Schwarten said the booklets were compiled with an emphasis on new buildings and the immediate spaces surrounding these buildings but could also be used to upgrade existing buildings.
“The guidelines provide wayfinding information that is easily transferable to urban spaces like malls and shopping centres. The design principles remain constant regardless of the type of spaces and places,” Mr Schwarten said.
“The booklets are a useful tool because they include inclusive design principles, techniques, strategies and solutions that will help resolve problems for all people.”
