(Media-Newswire.com) - PIONEERING work to make young Lancashire's people aware of the perils of underage drinking has received national praise at the finals of the Mentor UK CHAMP Awards.
Lancashire’s initiative, the Lookout Alcohol website ( www.lookoutalcohol.co.uk ) was developed by the Young Persons Alcohol Project in partnership with the School and Communities Partnership Team and scooped the top award in the Young People’s Involvement category.
The awards, which recognise achievements of those who work with children and young people to prevent alcohol misuse, were held at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in London.
They were judged by a panel of children and young people. The audience included youngsters, Government Ministers and MPs from all parties.
The site was designed by young people for young people. School children helped to create an interactive site which incorporates alcohol education, downloadable lesson plans for teachers and an information section.
County Councillor Marcus Johnstone, Cabinet member for community planning and partnerships said: “The county council is delighted with this achievement. The Young Persons Alcohol Project work hard to safeguard children from the effects of alcohol misuse.
"The success of this initiative is based on involving young people in the education of alcohol misuse.”
Samantha Beetham from the Young Persons Alcohol Project said: “We are delighted to have won the award. It is a great achievement for everyone involved. The £20,000 prize money will be spent on new initiatives to support alcohol misuse work with Lancashire’s young people.”
