(Media-Newswire.com) - Romany Mark Bruce, the acclaimed Brighton sculptor and painter, has spoken of the influence of Teresa Martin, his sculpture tutor at the Connaught Centre - City College Brighton and Hove’s Adult and Community Learning site. Romany was speaking at Brighton Town Hall where an exhibition showing work-in-progress of his modern landmark AIDS memorial sculpture was on display. In September 2007, Romany was selected by public ballot to sculpt the centrepiece of a memorial to those who have died and those whose lives have been affected by HIV and AIDS. The proposed location of this place of reflection and remembrance is New Steine Gardens in the heart of Kemptown, Brighton. The sculpture is expected to be completed by Summer 2009. Romany says:
"Getting into Adult Education and studying sculpture at the Connaught Centre for nine years completely changed my direction in life and my tutor Teresa Martin inspired me greatly. While working on the AIDS memorial sculpture, I’ve realised how much she taught me because I’m constantly looking at and assessing the sculpture with the creative insight she gave me which was very important and got me to where I am now as an artist."
Teresa Martin says:
"At College, Romany had a thirst for knowledge to enable him to improve his sculpting techniques and developed original means to cast his works himself and he’s subsequently exhibited all around the world. He’s very brave to take on a large public sculpture as it’s very physically and mentally demanding, but he’s inspired by the subject and has always been magnanimous in sharing his skills to the benefit of the community."
