Center for Global Peace through Commerce Presents Lecture on Haiti
Dominican University’s Center for Global Peace through Commerce will begin its fall series with a lecture titled “Biodiesel in Haiti: Business Solutions to Poverty,” by Lionel Jean-Baptiste, founder and chairman of the Haitian Congress to Fortify Haiti, and Kathleen Robbins, co-founder of Jatropha Pepinyè. The lecture will be held Tuesday, September 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Martin Recital Hall, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.
(Media-Newswire.com) - Dominican University’s Center for Global Peace through Commerce will begin its fall series with a lecture titled “Biodiesel in Haiti: Business Solutions to Poverty,” by Lionel Jean-Baptiste, founder and chairman of the Haitian Congress to Fortify Haiti, and Kathleen Robbins, co-founder of Jatropha Pepinyè. Lionel Jean-Baptiste grew up in Haiti and came to the United States at the age of 14. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Princeton University and a law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law. He served as a member of the African Liberation Support Committee that struggled against British and Portuguese colonialism and apartheid. He is a member of the NAACP, the Haitian American Community Association, and the Chicago Compatriots of the Caribbean. He is also a founding member of the Haitian Relief Fund in Illinois. He worked as a member of the Committee Against Repression in Haiti as an organizer of workers and unemployed youth, and as an activist against police brutality.
Jean-Baptiste is currently serving his third term as an alderman in the City of Evanston. He is a member of Chicago Bar Association, the Cook County Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. He is listed in Who’s Who Among American Lawyers, as well as Who’s Who In Black Chicago.
Kathleen Robbins received her engineering science degree from the United States Air Force Academy as well as an MBA and a doctoral degree in ministry from California State University in Sacramento. Robbins is the former director of Clean Energy of Green Microfinance, LLC and is the co-founder of Jatropha Pepinyè, a non-profit business that uses a non-edible plant native to Haiti as a biofuel source.
