Manchester lecturer is official Mozambique election observer
A senior politics lecturer from The University of Manchester is in Mozambique as one of the 13 election observers at Mozambique's National and Provincial Elections. Dr Andrew Russell from the University's School of Social Sciences is working under the leadership of former Sierra Leone President, Dr Ahmad Tejan Kabbah.
(Media-Newswire.com) - A senior politics lecturer from The University of Manchester is in Mozambique as one of the 13 election observers at Mozambique’s National and Provincial Elections. Dr Andrew Russell from the University’s School of Social Sciences is working under the leadership of former Sierra Leone President, Dr Ahmad Tejan Kabbah.
Though the Presidential and parliamentary elections were held last Wednesday, it may take more than a week for all the results to come in from across the country.
He said: “I have been researching elections for a number of years, so it’s always fantastic to be able to see how some of the theories work in practice.
“Mozambique has a young population and so my current research on young people and politics will have some relevance to this role.”
The Group was established by Commonwealth Secretary General Mr Kamalesh Sharma at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Co-operation of Mozambique, Oldemiro Baloi.
“This is an important election and provides the people of Mozambique with an opportunity to consolidate the democratic gains they have made”, the Secretary General said in a statement last week.
The Group observed the preparations for the election, as well as the the polling, counting and results process and the overall electoral environment.
They will also assess the overall conduct of the process and, where appropriate, make recommendations for the future strengthening of the electoral process in Mozambique.
Their report will be submitted to Mr Sharma, who will in turn send it to the Government of Mozambique, the National Election Commission of Mozambique and political parties, and eventually to all Commonwealth Governments.
