(Media-Newswire.com) - WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's Student Wellness Office, along with other community and campus groups, will be on campus to disseminate information about smoking cessation on Thursday ( Nov. 19 ) as part of the 34th annual Great American Smokeout. Members of the Wellness Office as well as the Tobacco Free Partnership of Tippecanoe County and Purdue's Academy of Student Pharmacists will be in Stewart Center, the Robert E. Heine Pharmacy Building and Stone Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to talk to students, faculty and staff about smoking cessation and to distribute gum and informational brochures and fliers.
Students interested in learning more about quitting also can pick up free "X-packs" from the Purdue Pharmacy in the Heine Pharmacy Building, Room 118. The packs are filled with information; a list of Web sites that offer smoking quitting tips; and items like toothpicks, stress putty and chewing gum. Trained pharmacy students also will offer one-on-one counseling to students who want to cut back or stop smoking.
The X-pack smoking cessation program is a joint collaboration among Purdue Pharmacy, the Purdue University Student Health Center and Student Wellness Office.
As the weather gets colder, the Student Wellness Center also will launch its "Come out of the cold" campaign, informing students about tobacco cessation resources available on campus.
The Great American Smokeout is part of the American Cancer Society's Great American Health Challenge, a year-round initiative that encourages Americans to adopt healthy lifestyles to reduce their risk of cancer.
