(Media-Newswire.com) - Munich, November 18, 2009 — Fujitsu today introduces two new models to its BS2000/OSD mainframe system line-up. Underlining its strength of innovation in the mainframe segment, the new high-end systems are perfect for virtualization. Fujitsu also announces the addition of support for guest Linux and Windows ( TM ) operating systems to the native BS2000/OSD platform for its mid-range SQ series business server.
S175 and S210 – new high-end BS2000/OSD systems
New S175 and S210 business server models provide mainframe customers with new consolidation opportunities for both physical and virtual systems. Answering demand for even higher system performance, the new S175 and S210 systems leverage the latest Intel 65nm processor technology to provide performance increases of up to 20 percent, and extend the BS2000/OSD system capacity range from 170 RPF ( 1 ) to a new highpoint of 5000 RPF. Ensuring the highest levels of system availability and security, all S-Servers now ship with hot-spare processors as standard equipment.
Maximum data center performance, high availability and scalability
The top-of-the-range new high-end S210 server is designed to provide maximum support for running multiple virtual machines, scaling up to 15-way, and extends the BS2000/OSD performance range to 5000 RPF.
Providing the processing power to support multiple VMs, the full system specification supports up to four multi-core CPUs, each with four cores, a maximum of 16 CPUs per system, and a maximum memory capacity of 256 GB. The S210 also has massive throughput capability, thanks to dynamic I/O channel allocation, with up to eight I/O processors supporting up to 256 peripheral channels, and provides 64 Fibre Channel interfaces, double the current maximum.
The new mid- to high-end S175 series supports up to 64GB of main memory and its specification can be extended to three processors, covering the performance range from 170 RPF to 1020 RPF ( 1 ). Both systems will be available from mid-2010.
SQ100 server system gains extensive VM functionality
Fujitsu also announces eight new models of its SQ100 business server, which add extensive VM functionality. Designed for smaller mainframe deployments, SQ100 business servers combine the benefits of mainframe scalability with high performing Intel’s x86 processors. The new model range begins with single-socket models starting at 12 RPF ( 1 ), is enhanced by dual- and tri-socket models, and tops out with a new quad-socket system, achieving 200 RPF ( 1 ).
Available from mid-2010, new SQ100 servers add support for multiple guest operating systems. In addition to multiple versions of the native BS2000/OSD system, customers can run business-critical Linux and Windows applications within own guest systems, providing a stable and powerful consolidation platform based on the mainframe heritage values of quality and stability.
Key advantages of the new VM functionality:
- Servers can be partitioned to run BS2000, Linux and Windows systems according to customer needs
- SQ business servers use the latest virtualization technology to provide necessary interfaces and manage guest system hardware resources
- A sophisticated role distribution model guarantees system security
- The BS2000 guest systems can still be administrated with the tried-and-tested VM2000 command line interface
- Central administration of server resources, peripheral and guest systems is handled by a web-based SQ server
1 BS2000 system performance is measured using the RPF benchmark. 1 RPF equals approximately 1.5 MIPS ( Million Instructions per Second ).
