(Media-Newswire.com) - A University of Manchester academic has been awarded a prestigious fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Professor Carole Goble, from the School of Computer Science, was awarded the honour following a meeting of the academy last week.
Fifty three of the UK's leading engineers have been elected, including leading industrialists, pioneering inventors and top academics.
Professor Goble was chosen because of her “achievements in eScience and semantic technologies, with significant contributions to both underpinning theory and engineering practice, leading to real systems that are transforming the way research is conducted, particularly in the life sciences.”
She gained her BSc in Computing and Information Systems from Manchester in 1982, joined the faculty staff in 1985 and founded the Information Management Group along with Norman Paton.
She has worked closely with life scientists for many years and is the director of the myGrid project, the UK’s largest e-Science pilot project,
Professor Goble has given keynote speeches in many of the major forums of her multiple disciplines, including international conferences on: Digital Curation, e-Social Science, Grid Computing, Hypertext and Hypermedia, Bioinformatics, Artifical Intelligence, Systems Biology, Discovery Science, Enabling Grid for E-SciencE, the Semantic Web, and Medical Informatics.
She also co-founded Cerebra, an early spin-off company to exploit Semantic Web technologies. Cerebra was sold in 2006.
Speaking about the recognition, Professor Goble said: “I am delighted and honoured to be elected a Fellow of the RA Engineering.
“This is not just an honour for myself but also for the amazing researchers and software engineers in my group who have realised my engineering visions with me.”
