(Media-Newswire.com) - The opening of a brand new police station in North Melbourne marked a new era of policing in the city’s inner-north, Police and Emergency Services Minister Bob Cameron said today.
Officially opening the new $20 million Melbourne North Police Station on Wreckyn Street in North Melbourne, Mr Cameron said the facility was a leap forward in the Brumby Labor Government’s commitment to making Victoria a safer place to live and work.
“This new 24-hour police station will keep the community safe and help continue to lower the local crime rate,” Mr Cameron said.
“The new station caters for a Uniform Branch, Crime Investigation Unit, Highway Patrol, and Proactive Program Unit.
“The new building is spread over four storeys and features four interview rooms, two holding rooms and sustainable design features. It also created 600 full-time jobs during construction.
“Victoria Police delivered this modern facility on-time and under budget, which will allow other critical police building projects to proceed.”
Member for Melbourne Bronwyn Pike said more than 80 officers would call the Melbourne North Police Station home.
“The residents of Melbourne’s inner-north are thrilled with the new police station. The station will service the suburbs of Carlton, Parkville, North Melbourne and Kensington,” Ms Pike said.
“The new station will complement the great work being done by members at existing stations across inner-city Melbourne and the Victoria Police Centre.”
Mr Cameron said since 1999, the Brumby Labor Government had committed $460 million towards the construction and refurbishment of more than 160 police stations and residences across Victoria.
“We are undertaking Victoria’s largest ever police station building program,” he said.
“Our Government is delivering Victoria Police a record budget of almost $2 million in 2010-11, and will deliver 1966 additional frontline police over five years, to help make Victoria’s streets and communities safer.”
Mr Cameron said Victoria's crime rate had fallen 29.9 per cent since 2000-01, making it the safest state in Australia.
“Since 2000-01, the overall crime rate in the Melbourne Police Service Area ( PSA ) has decreased by 65.1 per cent,” he said.
“I commend all police officers for the great job they do protecting Victorians and hope this new station will help local police in their efforts to keep their community safe.”
