(Media-Newswire.com) - Dr. Gary Brown, who has led Mercyhurst North East ( MNE ) for the past 15 years, will leave his position as executive vice president of MNE to assume a new post on the Erie campus as senior vice president and senior financial strategist, the college announced today.
Brown’s promotion, effective immediately, carries a broad range of responsibilities centered on the college’s financial services, financial planning and physical resources.
“Due to the anticipated challenges facing higher education, a strategic financial approach is warranted and Gary’s results-driven financial management experience in academia makes him the perfect choice to fill that role,” said Mercyhurst President Dr. Tom Gamble. “We welcome Gary’s expertise during this exciting time of growth for the college.”
Dr. Ken Zirkle, currently special assistant to Brown, has been chosen to assume Brown’s role as executive vice president on an interim basis while the college engages in a national search for Brown’s replacement.
“The past 15 years - or 20 if you count the early years - have been a labor of love,” said Brown. “Our North East campus has enjoyed tremendous growth in all aspects and our relationship with the surrounding community has never been better.”
Brown will be returning to the place his Mercyhurst career began – the Erie campus, where in 1989 he started as director of housing and residence life. In 1992, he was promoted to assistant dean of students and, from 1994 to 1996, served as associate dean of students and director of retention and residence life. Then, in 1996, Brown was named executive dean of Mercyhurst North East, a post he held until he was named executive vice president in 2003. He leaves that post after eight years.
Zirkle is the past president of the University of Findlay, Becker College and Post University. He holds an undergraduate degree in education from Edinboro University, a master's in counseling from Rutgers University and a doctorate in psychology from Penn State University. He completed post-doctoral work in higher education administration at Harvard University.
