Every fall we celebrate PublicolorDay, which was declared by Mayor Bloomberg in a 2006 proclamation to celebrate “Publicolor and its volunteers for proving that simple acts can make a profound and positive impact on struggling communities.” We select and transform NYC public spaces so that we can share the power of color and design with as many New Yorkers as possible. PublicolorDay is a collaborative celebration bringing our students, volunteers, and staff together with community leaders and government officials to beautify communities. About Publicolor: is a non-profit youth development organization that engages high-risk students, ages 12-21, in their education through a continuum of design-based programs and academic support. What makes Publicolor unique—and central to our mission—is the beautification and revitalization of public and civic spaces through the power of color and design, the affordable medium of paint, and community collaborations. Publicolor students have brought energy, inspiration, and life to hundreds of struggling schools and community facilities, benefitting over 350,000 low-income New Yorkers.
About Our Site Partners* NYCHA: The New York City Housing Authority ( NYCHA ) is committed to increasing opportunities for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers by providing safe, affordable housing and facilitating access to social and community services. More than 400,000 New Yorkers reside in NYCHA’s 334 public housing developments around the five boroughs, and another 235,000 receive subsidized rental assistance in private homes through the NYCHA-administered Section 8 Leased Housing Program.
Local 79: With over 9,000 members, Construction and General Building Laborers' Local 79 serves the five Boroughs of New York City and is affiliated with the Laborers International Union of North America - 500,000 men and women fighting for better wages and benefits, safer jobsites and greater opportunity.
100 Black Construction Workers was founded by members of Local 79 to improve the political, educational, social and economic status of African Americans within the construction industry.
