(Media-Newswire.com) - There was magic in the air on Monday November 12, when a group of 12 senior level teacher candidates from Charleston Southern University assisted Spann Elementary, a local PDS ( professional development site ) in selecting the winners of the PTA Arts Reflections competition. The theme of this year’s competition was “The Magic of a Moment.”
According to senior elementary education major Amanda Vazquez: “That’s exactly what my fellow classmates experienced: tons of magical moments through students’ literature, photography, dance, music, and visual arts. As a group, we went through each entry, sharing with each other what made that student’s moment magical. From getting a new puppy, to meeting their dad for the first time, the students expressed special moments through the creative arts.” Seniors Amanda Vasquez and her colleague Ashlynn Meyers served as student coordinators.
The future teachers deliberated over every entry , using a rubric provided by the National PTA to evaluate creativity, skill, and adherence to the theme. Dr. Linda Karges-Bone, the professor coordinating the project with PTA Reflection’s Committee chair Mrs. Lisa Jolly noted: “The future teachers evaluated the work using their own experiences, but tried to see the world through the eyes of children.”
