(Media-Newswire.com) - The public was introduced to the prevailing trends of information security and reminded to strengthen the protection of their computing devices from cyber attacks at a seminar today ( November 26 ).
As part of the Build a Secure Cyberspace 2012 campaign, the full-day seminar featured presentations by representatives from the Government, industry associations and solution providers on a range of topics from security considerations for e-banking and online shopping, to safe use of cloud technology and adoption of digital certificates. It aims to raise public awareness of emerging security threats and provide mitigation tips for the general public.
"Cyber attack is a security threat worldwide. There are frequent reports of cyber attacks on government agencies and organisations in different cities. It can cause malfunctioning of targeted computer systems or networks, resulting in information leakage, identity theft and disrupted businesses or services," the Deputy Government Chief Information Officer ( Consulting and Operations ), Mr Victor Lam, said.
"With the widespread adoption of emerging technologies, businesses, governments, schools and individuals are all potentially exposed to the risks of cyber attack. Members of the public and organisations should always stay alert and take appropriate precautions to safeguard their devices from such attacks," Mr Lam said.
Build a Secure Cyberspace is an annual campaign jointly organised by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, the Hong Kong Police Force and the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Co-ordination Centre, and comprises a series of public engagement activities including school visits, seminars and contests.
The campaign this year carries the theme "Combating Cyber Attacks" and focuses on security protection against online threats. Four public seminars have been held to provide participants with knowledge in combating cyber attacks and responding to security incidents. A poster design contest was also organised and awards were presented at today's seminar. Details about the contest and the winning entries are available at www.infosec.gov.hk/english/promotion/campaign2012_pdc.html .
