(Media-Newswire.com) - Larry Golden, executive director of the Illinois Innocence Project, will be the opening speaker of the spring semester of the 2012-13 MacMurray College Speaker series. The event is free and open to the public.
His presentation, “Found Guilty but Really Innocent,” will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17 at the Thoresen Recital Hall in the Putnam/Springer Center. Putnam/Springer is at the southeast corner of Clay and State streets on the MacMurray College campus.
The work of the Illinois Innocence Project contributed to the emergence of a national innocence movement to investigate the cases of those who were unfairly incarcerated. Mr. Golden will talk about why more than 1,000 people were convicted of serious crimes that they did not commit, and have been released from prison, most from death row.
How and why is this happening? What can be done? Mr. Golden will discuss these and other questions, using examples from the Illinois Innocence Project to illustrate the nature of the problem.
