(Media-Newswire.com) - Goldsmiths, University of London has partnered with leading global agency Magnum Photos to host a series of truly distinctive photography events and a projected exhibition in the seaside town of Bognor Regis.
The partnership is inspired by an international symposium, 'City to Sea', developed and curated by Rebecca Locke and David Kendall, visiting fellows in the Centre for Urban and Community Research ( CUCR ), Department of Sociology, at Goldsmiths.
City to Sea brings together artists, photographers and social scientists to develop visual projects and sociological research exploring culture, tourism, coastal regeneration and the heritage of the British seaside.
From 8 - 9 March 2013, City to Sea will be presenting the 'William Blake Imagination Photo Booth', a project inspired by the epic poetry of William Blake, whose seaside cottage still stands just to the east of Butlins in Bognor Regis. The photo booth will be positioned at Bognor Bandstand, and will give members of public the opportunity to create their own photo-portraits using an original and fun painting-with-light technique. Participants will be given assistance to use lights, and torches to draw anything they can imagine.
Rebecca Locke explained: "I had the privilege of reading a copy of Jerusalem that Blake had hand printed himself, and I started imagining how on this stretch of the southcoast he had seen these visions. The images we make through this participatory art project will catch a glimpse of the imagination of the participants on this same coastline."
Work from this participatory arts project will then be projected onto the side of Bognor Pier and the Shoreline Hotel, Butlins on Friday 15 March. A selection of photos will be printed at large scale and installed in shop windows throughout the town as a pop-up exhibition.
From 11 - 15 March, Magnum photographer Peter Marlow will lead a four day 'City to Sea Workshop' alongside Rebecca and David. The workshop will be hosted by icons of the British holiday industry, Butlins.
The workshop program will be accompanied by contextual presentations and discussions with Goldsmiths researchers and artists, including Paul Halliday, Course Leader of the MA in Photography and Urban Cultures and Bognor Regis historian Sylvia Endacott.
