(Media-Newswire.com) - Members of the 20 fraternities and sororities at the University of New Mexico concluded their annual Greek Week activities last week.
Every year around the end of February, the UNM Greek community gathers in the name of competition and philanthropy. This year, they put in more than 2,200 combined hours of community service at the Albuquerque Biopark and Zoo, and competed in various events, such as a Greek Sing competition, where fraternities and sororities team up with each other to put on musical skits in Popejoy Hall.
“Greek Sing nearly sold out the entire bottom bowl of Popejoy,” said Chris Salem, student chairmen of Greek Week 2014. “Our goal is to sell out the entire hall by next year.”
As is customary, the Greek community chooses a local charity to fundraise for. This year, they chose Basket of Hope, the Albuquerque branch of national organization which delivers care packages in the form of baskets for children diagnosed with cancer or other serious illness.
“In a little over a week, the UNM Greek Community raised over $15,000 for Basket of Hope,” Salem said. “This will enable them to provide gift baskets to hospitals that they would never have imagined serving, and the UNM Greeks will have left a lasting impression on Basket of Hope's organization.”
For over 100 years, the UNM fraternity and sorority community has been a vibrant piece of campus life. Since the beginning, members of these organizations have provided campus leadership, community service and high academic ideals and standards.
“I’m really proud of all the hard work and dedication demonstrated by the members of the UNM Greek community,” Salem said.
