(Media-Newswire.com) - Minister for Community Services Gavin Jennings today officially opened the first house to be built in Gippsland under a $39.5 million Bracks Government scheme to refurbish or replace community houses across Victoria.
Visiting Sale as part of Community Cabinet, Mr Jennings joined the five new residents, their families and neighbours for a celebration at the new Cunninghame Street house.
“The Bracks Government is giving people with a disability the chance to live within the general community and enjoy the same quality of life as other Victorians,” Mr Jennings said.
“Under stage one of the $39.5 million scheme, 47 homes will be replaced or refurbished.
“I am pleased to see the residents are very excited about their new home and are settling in well.”
The new house replaces previously occupied premises in Patten Street.
“Not only is Cunninghame Street state-of-the art in community residential living, but its closeness to the central hub of Sale provides so many opportunities for people to get out and mix with their local community,” Mr Jennings said.
Mr Jennings said the Bracks Government had allocated $39.5 million across three years in its Budget for the Strategic Replacement and Refurbishment program.
“The program supports the goals of the State Disability Plan, which outlines the Bracks Government’s 10-year vision to support the rights and individual aspirations of people with disabilities in the community,” Mr Jennings said.
“We want people with disabilities to have the same opportunities to contribute to and benefit from community life as any other Victorian.”
Mr Jennings said the Bracks Government’s investment in disability services had increased by 82 per cent since 1999.
