Ashdown to talk on why Bosnia's reconstruction is more successful than Iraq's
The reasons why the post-war reconstruction of Bosnia has been more successful than in Iraq are outlined in a free public lecture by Paddy Ashdown at the University of Bath on Thursday (23 Nov).
(Media-Newswire.com) - Lord Ashdown, who was UN High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2002-2006, will say that occupying foreign forces cannot make a country recover if its people do not have a common goal.
In his lecture – entitled Stabilising Peace in a Troubled World – he will also argue that we must learn from success and not give up in countries where this has not yet been achieved. Building a peace can take decades, he will say.
Lord Ashdown, former leader of the Liberal Democrat Party, will point to the successes in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the reconstruction programme, such as the return of more than a million displaced people, the removal of corrupt judges, the economic growth rate of five per cent and low inflation. He will argue that economic growth, a fair judiciary, democracy and social progress all go hand-in-hand.
The event is part of the University of Bath’s programme of lectures on international affairs organised with the Royal Society of Arts ( South West Region ).
The free lecture will take place in the University Hall building on the Claverton campus and starts at 6-30pm. Although it is free, people wanting to come should order tickets from Sheila Willmott, Events & Ceremonies Officer, by emailing Sheila Willmott or calling on ( 01225 ) 386631, or writing to her at Wessex House 8.16, University of Bath, BA2 7AY.
