Washington, D.C. -- Georgetown University student and Vermont native Greg Pope (COL '07) was awarded a Marshall Scholarship to pursue graduate degrees in the United Kingdom next year. Pope, an economics major from Barre, joins 14 other Georgetown students who have been awarded Marshall Scholarships in previous years.
(Media-Newswire.com) - "Greg is an outstanding member of the Georgetown community, and I am confident he will continue to grow as a scholar and campus leader as he pursues graduate studies abroad," said Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia. "We are pleased his achievements are being recognized with this prestigious scholarship."
The Marshall Scholarship recognizes young Americans of high ability who hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.7. The program links future American leaders to the United Kingdom by funding two years of graduate study at a university in the UK.
Inspired by his time in Vermont, Pope hopes to use the Marshall Scholarship to pursue a career bringing environmental and business interests together. In 2005, he worked with Vermont’s Department of Public Service on a plan to develop the state’s first commercial wind-power project. The project was eventually derailed by acrimonious wrangling between environmental groups and developers.
The experience motivated Greg to focus his undergraduate thesis on eco-efficiency, the idea that economic prosperity and environmental stewardship are not exclusive. As a Marshall Scholar, he plans to pursue graduate work on environmental economics and environmental science. Ultimately, he hopes to develop the expertise that will allow him to combine business profitability with environmental responsibility.
“I am convinced Greg is going to harness together his astonishing intelligence and his commitment to the environment and his natural ability as a leader, and with them he is going to teach us all how to preserve and sustain the world we share,” wrote English Professor and University Fellowship Secretary John Glavin in his nomination letter to the Marshall committee.
Greg was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in 2006. He was admitted to the university as a John Carroll Fellow, a fellowship designed to support undergraduate leaders. In 2005, he was awarded a highly competitive George F. Baker Scholarship, a scholarship that fosters leadership in business and community service.
Greg is also active on campus. He is a vice-chair of the Georgetown Lecture Fund, an orientation advisor for incoming students, and he has served as a class representative on the Georgetown College Academic Council. During football and basketball games, he leads the trombone section of the Georgetown Pep Band. He serves as co-chair of the Baker Scholars, he co-founded the Baker Group in 2005 to provide strategic assistance for a New Orleans organization rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. Through the Marshall program, Greg hopes to continue developing his leadership abilities.
“Ultimately, I want to serve as a pioneer for a new economy, one that exists within the greater ecosystem, not outside of it,” he wrote in his personal statement for the Marshall committee. “I am ever hopeful that my generation of businesspeople, government officials, scientists and environmentalists will find economically viable solutions to our ecological problems.”
The Marshall Scholarship program was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1953 and commemorates the humane ideals of the European Recovery Program ( Marshall Plan ). They are funded by the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office and administered by the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission in the UK. The selection process in the United States is managed by the British Council, on behalf of the British Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the regional Consulates-General in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.
