Universities UK have announced that Professor Rick Trainor, Principal of King's College London, will be the next President of Universities UK. He will succeed Professor Drummond Bone (Vice-Chancellor, University of Liverpool) on 1 August 2007 and will hold the post of President for the two academic years 2007/8 and 2008/9.
(Media-Newswire.com) - Commenting on his election, Professor Trainor said: "I am very much looking forward to taking up the Presidency next year. It will be an exciting and challenging time for higher education, and I know Universities UK will have a key role to play in influencing and shaping any changes to come."
Currently Treasurer of Universities UK and a member of UUK's health & social care and research committees, Professor Trainor is Professor of Social History at King's and holds degrees from Brown University, Princeton University and the University of Oxford. He is a member of the Academy of the Social Sciences, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He is also an Honorary Fellow of Merton College, Oxford, and Trinity College of Music. He is a Fulbright Commissioner and is chair of the advisory panel of the National Teaching Fellowships Scheme ( individual strand ).
Professor Trainor was formerly Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich and, prior to that, Senior Vice-Principal of the University of Glasgow. He is married to Dr Marguerite Dupree, an academic at the University of Glasgow, and has two children.
