Miami alumnus William Sauerland wins British Marshall Scholarship
William Sauerland, who graduated from Miami in 2005, is one of 44 post-graduates nationwide awarded the British Marshall Scholarship to study in the United Kingdom next fall. A countertenor, Sauerland is currently a member of the Grammy award-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer.
(Media-Newswire.com) - The Marshall Scholarship provides two to three years of study at a British university and is worth about $60,000. Sauerland will join the master's program in vocal performance at the Royal College of Music.
At Miami, Sauerland, who received a bachelor's degree in vocal performance and music education, conducted research with faculty mentor Audrey Luna ( music ) on the authenticity of countertenors in Baroque opera and on the technique and pedagogy of modern falsettists. He is interested in the study and performance of music from the 17th and 18th centuries.
He was selected to sing with Chanticleer in 2005, and has performed in concert halls worldwide including Vienna's Musikverein, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw and the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow.
The Marshall Scholarship was established in 1953 as a gesture of thanks to the people of the United States for the assistance received after World War II under the Marshall Plan.
Sauerland, from New Paris, was honored by the City of Oxford with an official declaration naming Oct, 10, 2006, as "William Sauerland Day," when Chanticleer was in Oxford for a Performing Arts Series concert at Hall Auditorium.
