COOLOOLA’S $1 MILLION REVAMP COMPLETED SIX MONTHS EARLY
Revamped campgrounds, improved picnic areas, a new canoe launch and a state-of-the-art toilet are some of the improvements finished six months ahead of schedule at the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park, north of Noosa.
(Media-Newswire.com) - Environment Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the new and improved facilities fulfilled a $1 million election promise to improve recreational facilities at Cooloola.
“Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service received the $1 million over three years and has made great progress to finish Cooloola’s revamp ahead of time,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Projects completed include a major redevelopment of Freshwater ( $300,000 ) and Harry’s Hut ( $100,000 ) campgrounds, and day-use areas at Freshwater ( $100,000 ) and Bymien ( $80,000 ).
“Harry’s Hut canoe launch site now has two specific areas with canoe storage ( $80,000 ).
“An innovative wet-composting toilet has been provided at Double Island Point ( $160,000 towards a total cost of $300,000 ).”
Ms Nelson-Carr said campers on Teewah Beach could now access a new service area to obtain water and empty their portable chemical toilets – this cost $50,000 to establish.
“Freshwater Road has been realigned and upgraded at a cost of $80,000 and this will be fully commissioned after the removal of the wreck of the Cherry Venture.
“QPWS has also spent $50,000 installing solar-powered pumps and lighting for improved sustainability at Freshwater,” she said.
“As well as the $1 million in improvements, a further $200,000 was spent at Inskip Peninsula last year to upgrade toilets and campgrounds.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said the Beattie Government was committed to protecting Queensland’s natural heritage, and these improvements would ensure this popular area will be enjoyed by everyone with reduced environmental impact.
