(Media-Newswire.com) - A new wastewater treatment plant has been opened at Wiluna by Water Resources Minister John Kobelke.
The Minister said the upgraded treatment system, comprising a pumping main, new pump station, connecting pipeline and an evaporation pond 1.5km out of town, replaced three treatment ponds located in central Wiluna.
While Wiluna had been adequately serviced by its septic tank system for wastewater, it was clear the treatment ponds could no longer stay in close proximity to the school and housing.
“There are obvious health issues with treatment plants located in the central town area and that is why it was decided to move the facility 1.5km south-west of Wiluna,” Mr Kobelke said.
“The number one requirement was to move the ponds out of town altogether and when the Water Corporation presented their recommendation we immediately accepted it and ask them to go ahead.
“This new facility vastly improves services, and has been completed six months ahead of the June 2007 schedule at a significantly lower than expected cost,” he said.
Mr Kobelke said the Water Corporation would take over control of the town’s wastewater scheme from the shire.
He said there had been considerable help given to the Water Corporation, particularly in the areas of design and procurement, which had fast-tracked the project and the expertise of DM Civil to construct the new scheme.
Mr Kobelke said the new treatment facility added to other important community infrastructure that had been built in Wiluna, including a new training centre, art gallery, swimming pool and other community improvements.
He said the two biggest issues of concern by the State Government in Wiluna had been relocating and upgrading the wastewater scheme and a new school, which would be ready for students next year and included a new library and cultural centre.
“Everyone involved in the new treatment facility has done a fantastic job and the community and Government is grateful,” Mr Kobelke said.
