(Media-Newswire.com) - David Cesarani OBE Professor of Jewish History at Royal Holloway, University of London has been awarded the prestigious Gerrard and Ellman Award for his book Becoming Eichmann ( 2006 ), by the American Jewish Book Council. The award will be presented on March 6 in New York.
The only organization of its kind, the Jewish Book Council is the chief proponent of the Jewish literary tradition and each year the National Jewish Book Awards honour some of the best and most exciting authors in the field of Jewish literature.
This is Professor Cesarani′s first book award and he is understandably pleased with the achievement, “The award came as a complete surprise and I am delighted. It is fantastic to get such recognition from a prestigious body like the Jewish Book Council of America,” he said.
The book was not easy to write and he found the process difficult, “Writing about Eichmann was a challenge, and at times it was quite distressing. But mass atrocity and genocide is still going on, so I hope the book will help people to understand the perpetrators and be better equipped to deal with racism and the murderous actions it can lead to,” he explained.
Professor Cesarani′s other publications include Eichmann: His Life and Crimes ( 2004 ) which has been translated into German, Italian, Dutch and Swedish, and The Jews and the Left / The Left and the Jews ( 2004 ) written primarily for Members of Parliament. He is also co-editor of the journal Patterns of Prejudice.
Professor Cesarani served on the advisory board of the Imperial War Museum′s permanent Holocaust exhibition. He has made a number of radio documentaries for the BBC and acted as consultant for several historical programmes on television, including The Irving Trial ( C4, 2000 ) and I Met Adolf Eichmann ( BBC2, 2001 ).
He was a member of the British delegation to the International Task Force for Intergovernmental Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research and is currently an advisor to the Home Office on Holocaust Memorial Day as well as other UK and overseas NGOs.
