(Media-Newswire.com) - Trading Standards Officers in Swansea have issued an urgent warning on illicit Vodka after a raid on an illegal distillery in Cardiff.
Officers are warning people who have bought the 1806 Christoff brand vodka not to drink it and, if they have, to seek immediate medical advice.
The alert comes after Revenue and Customs officers raided the distillery in Cardiff and discovered counterfeit vodka containing high levels of methanol.
Effects of methanol poisoning include abdominal pain, drowsiness and dizziness, blurred vision leading to blindness and breathing difficulties.
Symptoms of methanol poisoning can be delayed for several hours, and
anyone who thinks they may have drunk this product should seek immediate medical advice.
Trading Standards Officer Dave Picken said, "We are on the look out for any bottles of this counterfeit vodka being sold in Swansea. It is likely that it will be sold informally from the boot of a car or from houses that are not licensed to sell alcohol. If anyone is offered bottles of it they should report it to us and we will act. Any information received will be treated with discretion to protect individuals who have been offered the vodka.
City and County of Cardiff Council have sent samples of the product to the Public Analyst for testing. Results are expected early next week.
