(Media-Newswire.com) - Surf Coast Shire will receive up to $35,000 to update its planning scheme with stronger protection for its unique coastal landscapes, the Minister for Planning, Justin Madden, announced today.
The funding is part of a $600,000 Bracks Government commitment to support the implementation of the Coastal Spaces Landscape Assessment Study, released in September last year.
The landmark study identified and mapped Victoria’s coastal scenery from the South Australian Border to New South Wales, so that any development application takes into account significant landscape values.
“There is no doubt that Victoria’s coastal landscapes are loved by many and we want to ensure protection for generations to come,” Mr Madden said.
“This funding is part of the Bracks Government’s long-term commitment to protecting our significant coastline and guiding future development in line with community expectations.”
Under today’s announcement, the Surf Coast Shire will receive up to $35,000 and Moyne Shire and Colac-Otway will receive up to $40,000 each to integrate the Coastal Spaces Landscape Assessment Study into their respective planning schemes.
“I would like to congratulate the Surf Coast Shire for the work it has put into these changes underway,” Mr Madden said.
“Today’s announcement is the first funding round in this program, and the Bracks Government will continue to work with other coastal councils to progress implementation of this important study.
“This funding will help all coastal councils incorporate stronger protection measures into their planning schemes so the things community and visitors love about their coast can be better protected.”
The Coastal Spaces Landscape Assessment Study was developed as part of the $2 million Coastal Spaces Initiative to manage population growth and protect the environment.
As part of its commitment to implementing the Coastal Spaces Initiative, the Bracks Government has allocated $600,000 under the Environmental Sustainability Action Statement towards better managing coastal landscapes.
“We will continue to work with local councils and the community to ensure that Victoria’s valuable coastlines remain fantastic places to live and to holiday,” Mr Madden said.
