(Media-Newswire.com) - All Western Australians are being encouraged to become volunteers in their local community and discover the positive change it can bring to their lives.
Launching National Volunteer Week 2007, Volunteering Minister Sue Ellery said volunteering had enormous social and economic benefits for all communities and there were plenty of opportunities for people to become involved.
“Currently, there are a remarkable 430,000 volunteers - about one third of our population - working throughout WA, helping to make their community a better place to live,” Ms Ellery said.
“Volunteering has great social value, with the wider community benefiting from projects made possible through the work of volunteers, while individuals gain new life skills, make new friends and gain the satisfaction of making a real difference.”
National Volunteer Week runs until Sunday and various events throughout the State have been designed to promote volunteering and recruit new volunteers, with the message ‘See the Change…..Volunteering!’
The Minister said that no matter a person’s age, everyone had something to offer in volunteering and highlighted the commitment of the State’s seniors, with 43 per cent of people over the age of 60 giving their time to community services and projects.
Ms Ellery said the State Government was committed to initiatives such as the State-wide Volunteer Resource Centre Program, which supported volunteering.
“The Volunteer Resource Centre program is significant because it helps people find volunteering roles that best suit them - benefiting the individual and the organisation they volunteer for,” she said.
“I hope that all Western Australians who attend one of these events, or hears about volunteering through the media, are inspired to become involved so they too can see the change in themselves and also in the world around them.”
