(Media-Newswire.com) - Lieutenant Governor David A. Paterson today issued the following statement regarding the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, which would provide for human embryonic stem cell research.
“The passage of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act brings the United States one step closer to fulfilling the promise of stem cell research for people suffering from debilitating and often life-threatening diseases. This critical increase in federal funding, combined with the strong ethical guidelines that the Act establishes, will benefit scientific and medical advancement across the country.
In New York, the Spitzer-Paterson administration has made a commitment to investing $600 million of state funding in stem cell research over the next eleven years, with $100 million already earmarked for this year. New York’s initiative provides for an ethics committee and prohibits funding for research on human reproductive cloning.
The efforts by New York and other states must be complemented by leadership at the federal level in order to reach the full potential of this promising field of research. I urge the President to heed to the broad bipartisan voices that support the passage of this bill and sign it into law.” New York State's recently enacted budget includes provisions for funding stem cell research. The newly created Empire State Stem Cell Board will provide grants to basic, applied, translational and other research that advances scientific discoveries in fields related to stem cell biology. The Board will oversee and administer the Empire State Stem Cell Trust, which will collect and distribute funds.
Governor Eliot Spitzer charged Lieutenant Governor Paterson with spearheading the administration’s efforts in this area in light of his long history as an advocate for stem cell research.
