Dating violence, domestic violence and sexual assault are not new topics, and are among this culture’s best-kept secrets, as the people who are victimized are often filled with shame and fear. What is new, however, is a prevention program in the shape of a play called "You the Man," written by Cathy Plourde and presented by Add Verb Productions.
Role Models "You The Man" is a one-man play addressing unhealthy relationships, dating violence and sexual assault. It’s unusual in that it men in preventing sexual assault and dating abuse and provides a model for empathetic male voices – currently under-represented in culture and media.
The play weaves together six male characters that are affected by violence against women: Stan The Man, a Dear Abby meets hip-hop cool guy; The Virgin Larry, an unfortunately nicked-named athlete who is boxed in by the macho code; and Officer Friendly, whose charm and humor counterpoint and make more poignant the hard realities of sexual assault. Mitchell is the central figure in "You The Man," who, along with her father Michael and her teacher Dr. Wing, is increasingly concerned about his friend Jana’s safety.
“'You The Man" is such an effective program in part because its male characters ring so true," said Jackson Katz, founder of the Mentors in Violence Prevention Program ( MVP ). "This provides men with a way to empathize and identify with issues that many of us have long chosen to shy away from. The most important recent development in gender violence prevention is an increased focus on men. "You The Man" is an original, creative - and dare I say it - entertaining contribution to this movement. It promises to spark some really useful dialogue between women and men on college campuses, high schools and all sorts of community settings.”
Dan Haggerty Performed by actor Dan Haggerty, "You The Man" is a dynamic play that requires him to switch in and out of six characters quickly with ease and grace. The play runs about 45 minutes and will be followed by a panelist discussion and Q &A with UNE’s Clinical Counseling Director, Dr. Jane McCabe, and advocates from the Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine and local Domestic Violence Agency, Caring Unlimited.
