(Media-Newswire.com) - Highly innovative affordable houses, featuring alternative design, fast construction techniques, and technologically advanced materials will be showcased at the State Government’s Seville Grove residential estate in the City of Armadale.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister and Armadale MLA Alannah MacTiernan said following an extensive Australia-wide search, 11 builders had been invited to develop 13 display homes on the estate, all designed to demonstrate how style, environmental sustainability and affordability could be achieved without diminishing the quality of design, construction and streetscapes.
“For the first time, homebuyers can view a wide range of alternate housing options in one place and compare qualities such as affordability, appearance and climate performance to help them make sound investment and lifestyle choices,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“The intention is for the ideas on show to be developed and extended to suit the residential housing market throughout Western Australia.”
The Minister said Government developments should lead the way in innovation and sustainability.
The homes feature a range of advanced technology construction techniques involving alternate building materials such as insulated concrete, lightweight steel or aluminium panels which are fireproof, cyclone resistant, thermally efficient and easy to transport and erect.
“These technologies have slashed construction times - and therefore labour costs - to as little as six hours to get to roof height,” Ms MacTiernan said.
As well as offering such features as grey water recycling, rainwater tanks and WaterWise appliance options, the homes can be constructed using passive and active solar technology to maximise sunlight alignment and cross ventilation for winter warming and summer cooling.
Additional innovation includes aerated construction blocks which enable moveable or removable internal walls, and a new steel product using nanotechnology - altering steel at a molecular level - to improve a building’s thermal qualities.
“The State Government is pleased with the way the builders, designers and materials suppliers are so enthusiastically embracing a new way forward in home building in WA,” the Minister said.
The demonstration housing is due to be open to the public in June.
