Program offers free dental care for children with disabilities
The statewide program, Dental Care for Persons with Disabilities, is administered by the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the UI College of Dentistry, the UI Center for Disabilities and Development and the Iowa Department of Public Health.
(Media-Newswire.com) - Children and young adults with disabilities and from low-income families may be eligible for free dental care through a program coordinated by the University of Iowa.
The statewide program, Dental Care for Persons with Disabilities, is administered by the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the UI College of Dentistry, the UI Center for Disabilities and Development and the Iowa Department of Public Health.
To qualify, participants must be Iowa residents younger than age 21 and have a physical, emotional or developmental disability. Participants' family income must total less than 200 percent of the federal poverty guideline. Those with any form of dental insurance, including Medicaid ( Title XIX ) or Hawk-I, are not eligible for this program.
The program provides up to $300 per year in preventive and restorative dental treatment, including examinations and dental sealants. Because funding is limited, orthodontic and extensive cosmetic reconstruction is not available.
Dental services are provided at the UI Center for Disabilities and Development in Iowa City and at private dental offices across the state. Participating dentists are located in Altoona, Ames, Ankeny, Bellevue, Carroll, Cedar Rapids, Clinton, Council Bluffs, Creston, Des Moines, Dubuque, Laurens, Maquoketa, Marion, Marshalltown, Mason City, Monona, Monticello, New Hampton, Nora Springs, Onawa, Sioux Center, Sioux City, Spirit Lake, Story City, Waterloo, Waukon and West Burlington.
