(Media-Newswire.com) - The parents of peace activist Rachel Corrie, who died at 23 while fighting for human rights in the Gaza Strip, will read from their daughter's published journals at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22 in the Hawkeye Room ( formerly the Wheelroom ) on the ground floor of the University of Iowa's Iowa Memorial Union ( IMU ). Cindy and Craig Corrie's reading of "Let Me Stand Alone: The Journals of Rachel Corrie" is sponsored by the UI Lecture Committee and is free and open to the public.
A question and answer session will follow the reading, and the Corries will sign copies of the book, which was published in January by W.W. Norton & Co. and will be available for purchase at the event. Books also will be available in the IMU University Bookstore.
A lifelong writer, Rachel Corrie grew up in Olympia, Wash. and was a student at the Evergreen State College. While there, Corrie joined the Olympia Movement for Justice and Peace and, later, the International Solidarity Movement, leading to her travels in the Gaza Strip as a human rights activist. On March 16, 2003, Rachel was killed by a bulldozer while trying to block the Israeli demolition of a Palestinian family's home in Rafah, Gaza.
Craig and Cindy Corrie were both born and raised in Iowa and attended Drake University. Rachel's writing -- letters, journal entries, poems, e-mails, and drawings -- from Gaza reflects her personal connection to a family farm in the state, says Sharon Benzoni, chair of the UI Lecture Committee.
For more than 30 years, the Lecture Committee has brought some of the world's great thinkers to the UI campus. Speakers have included an impressive roster of national and international figures in science, politics, business, human rights, law and the arts. The UI Lecture Committee is a Presidential Charter Committee whose membership consists of students, faculty and staff. The series is funded through student fees with select lectures supported in part by the F. Wendell Miller Fund.
