(Media-Newswire.com) - A strategic new alliance between coal mining and environmental groups is a major step forward in the effort to tackle climate change, Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said today.
The Australian Coal Association, the CFMEU, WWF and The Climate Institute today announced the alliance, which will accelerate the development of carbon capture and storage ( CCS ) technologies.
“This kind of alliance will bring together diverse viewpoints, will challenge the collective thinking, and help to broker a fresh vision for research and development of carbon capture and storage,” Mr Wilson said.
“On the surface it looks like an unlikely group of partners. However, they are not focusing on how they differ, but on where they agree.
“Diversity is the strength of this alliance, as all the representative groups have a strong interest in working together to develop workable climate change solutions.”
Mr Wilson said a vital role of the alliance was to develop a better understanding of CCS technologies among the public, policymakers and opinion-leaders.
“We all need to be on the same page, heading in the same direction.
“This alliance will encourage support at all levels of the community about the fundamental importance of developing these technologies.”
Mr Wilson said the collaboration would add momentum to the work of the Queensland Government and coal industry through the Clean Coal Council.
“The Queensland Government and coal industry is directly investing $900 million into the research, development, demonstration and commercial deployment of low emission technologies.
“We have two projects of international significance underway - ZeroGen and the Callide OxyFuel project - and the work of the alliance group would strongly complement these initiatives.
“As a nation we need to reduce our carbon footprint, while satisfying our economy’s need for energy and maintaining the quality of lifestyle we are accustomed to.”
