(Media-Newswire.com) - The next stage in the Cheltenham Kingston Centre redevelopment will go ahead thanks to a $45 million boost delivered in this week’s Brumby Government State Budget.
Health Minister Daniel Andrews said the works will build a new 64-bed sub-acute ward and provide new patient treatment facilities including a new hydrotherapy pool.
“Our $45 million commitment to the Kingston Centre is part of a $466.9 million capital boost in the Budget to continue rebuilding Victoria’s hospitals and health infrastructure,” Mr Andrews said.
“The 64-bed sub-acute ward will provide greater comfort and facilities for patients at the Kingston Centre.
“The redevelopment will also provide new facilities for ambulatory services, and will cater for an extra 32,000 treatments for day patients.
“The new hydrotherapy pool and other infrastructure improvements will also provide much-needed updated facilities for day patients and inpatients at the Kingston Centre.”
Bentleigh MP Rob Hudson said the improvements would improve care for patients, particularly older people, by developing and promoting effective alternatives to hospital care.
“The work as part of Stage 2 of the redevelopment will enable the Kingston Centre to provide even better patient care more efficiently, which will result in more people getting the treatment they need close to home,” Mr Hudson said.
Mordialloc MP Janice Munt said the redevelopment will improve amenities for patients and the safety and comfort of the work environment for staff.
“It will give the centre greater operational flexibility in delivering its services, with co-located therapy areas, and improved patient privacy, dignity and respect with the new accommodation,” Ms Munt said.
Mr Andrews said the Brumby Government has made a long-term commitment to investing in hospitals and in rebuilding Victoria’s public health system.
“This Budget shows the Brumby Government is taking action now to deliver quality health services for Victorian families,” he said.
“This funding announcement builds on the State Government’s record investment in health that has seen us increase health services funding by 112 per cent since 1999, more than 61 hospitals and aged care facilities rebuilt or upgraded and more than 8000 extra nurses and 1800 doctors employed.”
