BUDGET BOOST TO UPGRADE PRAHRAN AND WINDSOR STATIONS
Two of the busiest stations on the Sandringham line will be upgraded following a $3 million commitment made in this week's State Budget.
Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said the upgrades of Prahran and Windsor stations were part of a $794.1 million infrastructure package to boost capacity and improve public transport for all Victorians.
(Media-Newswire.com) - Two of the busiest stations on the Sandringham line will be upgraded following a $3 million commitment made in this week’s State Budget.
Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said the upgrades of Prahran and Windsor stations were part of a $794.1 million infrastructure package to boost capacity and improve public transport for all Victorians.
“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to deal with the massive growth in patronage by upgrading stations, providing more car parking and adding capacity to the network,” Ms Kosky said.
“Prahran and Windsor are popular stations on the Sandringham line, with about 11,000 people using the two stations each weekday.
“These station refurbishments, to be delivered from early 2009 onwards, will make the stations safer, more accessible and more comfortable for all commuters.
“This is just part of a comprehensive Budget package for the metropolitan rail network, which also includes $32 million for new car parking spaces at 10 stations across Melbourne, $10.4 million for design works to extend the Epping line, and more than $275 million for extra tracks, platforms and train stabling in a number of locations.”
Member for Prahran, Tony Lupton MP said works to be undertaken at Prahran and Windsor station will include improvements to accessibility, lighting, signage and seating, as well as graffiti removal and repainting.
“As a heritage-listed structure, Windsor Station is in particular need of an upgrade to ensure its heritage qualities are preserved for future generations,” Mr Lupton said.
“Thanks to this $3 million funding boost, both of these historic stations will remain a centrepiece of community pride for many years to come.” Work on the two stations is expected to be completed by mid-2010.
Prahran and Windsor became Host Stations in 2004, which means they are staffed during the morning peak and customers have access to restrooms during these times.
