(Media-Newswire.com) - CORPUS CHRISTI -- Dr. Mark Hussey, director of Texas AgriLife Research, has named Dr. Juan A. Landivar as director of the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Corpus Christi. Landivar assumed his duties June 2.
Since 1998, Landivar had served as director of technical services for Delta & Pine Land International and Monsanto, and his duties took him throughout South America.
From 1989 to 1998, he served as research crop physiologist at the Corpus Center. “Having worked here during most of 1990s,” Landivar said, “I’m thrilled to be back to the Coastal Bend area, picking up where I left off with old friends and colleagues, and making new ones every day.”
Dr. Mark Hussey, who is also interim vice chancellor for agriculture and life sciences, said Landivar is a perfect match for the Corpus Center.
“Dr. Landivar knows the Coast Bend area well and has a great vision for that center,” Hussey said. “We are fortunate to have a person of Juan’s expertise, experience and leadership there.”
Landivar said the geographic and climatic conditions of the Coastal Bend Region of Texas provide excellent opportunities to develop research programs focused on solving regional and state problems.
His international experiences would allow him to take advantage of contacts to develop new research projects, Landivar said.
“I hope to take advantage of the many opportunities here to support and expand research programs in livestock, wildlife management, shrimp and other seafood production, and sustainable and environmentally sound grain and cotton production systems,” he said.
A native of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Landivar earned his doctorate in 1987 in crop physiology at Mississippi State University. He also earned a master’s degree there in 1979 in plant breeding and a bachelor’s degree in crop science in 1974.
Established in 1974, the Corpus Center employs 65 full-time employees, including 21 in AgriLife Extension and 44 in AgriLife Research.
Center research projects include studies of animal and invertebrate nutrition, aquaculture, agronomy and cropping systems, forages and native plants, animal and plant physiology, economics and entomology. Work is also done in plant pathology, soil science, weed science and water quality.
Landivar replaces Dr. Bobby Eddleman, who had been director of the center since 1986 and retired in March. Writer( s ): Rod Santa Ana, 956-968-5585,r-santaana@tamu.edu Contact( s ): Dr. Juan Landivar, 316-265-9201, jalandivar@ag.tamu.edu
