(Media-Newswire.com) - University of California, Irvine Medical Center again has been ranked as one of the nation’s best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. This marks the hospital’s eighth consecutive year on the “America’s Best” list. Among the top 50 hospitals, UC Irvine is listed 18th for urology and 40th for geriatrics. Gynecology joins this year’s list, rated 30th among the top 50. The annual report hits the newsstands July 14.
“This recognition reflects our ability to provide patients with the highest level of quality care,” said Dr. David N. Bailey, UCI’s Health Affairs vice chancellor. “Our reputation as one of the country’s best hospitals is built on that commitment as well as the excellent faculty and staff one expects in an academic medical center.”
U.S. News & World Report ranks hospitals on their ability to treat the toughest and most challenging cases. Using methodology created by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, the magazine combines a hospital’s reputation, mortality and quality of patient care services, such as nursing, to achieve the rankings. Additional points are awarded to hospitals with Magnet status or a Level I trauma center – two designations UC Irvine Medical Center holds.
This year, U.S. News evaluated 5,453 hospitals nationally for excellence in treating complex cases through bench-to-bedside research, advanced procedures and comprehensive patient care within a specialty. Of those, only 170, or slightly more than 3 percent, met the standard in one or more specialties.
UC Irvine’s ranking in urology can be attributed to the strong reputation of its highly trained doctors. They were among the first in the nation to use robotic surgery to treat prostate cancer and are leading the way in new, minimally invasive surgery techniques.
The hospital’s reputation in geriatrics also is well established. Researchers and clinicians collaborate on therapies and treatments for health issues and address the challenge of elder abuse.
In gynecology, UC Irvine’s multidisciplinary team of specialists is world renowned in treating gynecologic cancers, diseases of the reproductive tract and complicated pregnancies.
UC Irvine Medical Center plans to open its new, state-of-the-art University Hospital in 2009. The facility will include spacious, private rooms and an additional 191 beds that will offer patient-oriented healing. Carefully planned intensive care units, treatment rooms, laboratories and surgical suites will further facilitate the university’s educational mission and its ability to provide bench-to-bedside research and leading-edge care.
