(Media-Newswire.com) - Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – All of the stargazing at the Town of Oyster Bay's Movies by Moonlight program on Wednesday, August 13 at Stehli Beach in Bayville won't be directed at the movie screen. Hofstra’s Astronomy Outreach program will provide telescopes to allow movie goers the chance to see stars of a more heavenly variety. The program begins at 8:30 p.m.
The telescopes, which also will be at the Monday, August 11 Music Under the Stars program with the Peter Duchin Orchestra at 7 p.m. at H. B. Mattlin Middle School in Plainview, are part of an expansion of Hofstra’s Astronomy Outreach program. Clear skies on those dates should allow patrons to view the moon, Jupiter, Jupiter's moons, and the Perseid meteor shower.
Program Director Donald Lubowich, Ph.D., who also runs Stars on Sunday programs during the school year at Hofstra's observatory atop the Physics and Chemistry Building, will bring Hofstra telescopes for the two community programs through an arrangement with the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Youth and Community Services. Volunteers from the Amateur Observers’ Society of New York and Custer Institute and Observatory in Southold will assist with telescope observations. Dr. Lubowich plans to expand the Music and Astronomy Under the Stars program in 2009 – the International Year of Astronomy – to additional concerts sponsored by the Towns of Hempstead, Huntington, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay.
Last year, NASA awarded $50,000 to Hofstra’s Astronomy Outreach Program to bring star-gazing and hands-on astronomy activities to children receiving medical treatment at the Hagedorn Pediatric Inpatient Center at Winthrop University Hospital. An earlier $44,500 NASA grant allowed Dr. Lubowich to purchase a telescope and train staff at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island in New Hyde Park to work with hospitalized children and their families.
Hofstra University is a dynamic private institution where students can choose from about 145 undergraduate and 155 graduate programs in liberal arts and sciences, business, communication, education and allied human services, and honors studies, as well as a School of Law.
